Whilst our heart will always be with Alfa Romeo, every once in a while, a special car comes along that captures our imagination and this is one of those cars.
This Moretti 2300S cabriolet by Michelotti is one of only a handful made and is surely one of the rarest of 1960s coach-built cars produced. Shown by Moretti at the 1962 Turin Motor Show, this car was originally purchased by an English gentleman who we believe was stationed in the forces in Italy, as it remained Italian registered until 1967 when he returned to the UK and brought the car back with him, importing it and registering it in the UK in the same year. It remained in his ownership until 2006.
This Moretti has now been the subject of a 2,300 hour restoration over seven years completed at the end of 2018 by leading marque specialists DTR Sports Cars. It is therefore presented in superb condition throughout, as you would expect. On completion it was road tested by Richard Hestletine and featured in the November 2018 issue of Classic and Sports Car Magazine. Some of our images are from that article and we thank Richard for his permission to use them.
Details of the restoration are ‐
Body - was fully stripped, garnet blasted and zinc phosphate coated before metal work commenced. It took over 1,200 hours to bring the body of the car to the condition it is presented in today. Once fully prepared, it was finished in Glasurit Ferrari Celeste due to it being very similar to the original colour. The underside was fully detailed using a roll over jig.
Mechanical - engine was fully rebuilt with a polished crankshaft, new big end and main bearings, new small ends and new (oe) pistons fitted. The bottom end, including the new clutch, was fully balanced. The cylinder head was rebuilt with unleaded seats and new valves. The carburettors were overhauled and detailed, all other engine ancillaries were rebuilt with the exception of the water and oil pumps and hosing, which were replaced with new correct units. The radiator and heater matrix were remade with new higher flow matrixes fitted.
Transmission - The transmission, suspension and brakes were fully rebuilt including servos, callipers and brake pads. The differential was rebuilt with all new bearings and seals and the prop shaft fully balanced.
Electrical - Wiring loom entirely replaced with a new custom-made loom and the dynamo and starter motor rebuilt.
Wheels - The original Borrani wheels were sent to Italy for full restoration and detailing, on their return they were fitted with period correct new Pirelli tyres.
Interior ‐ The interior was fully re trimmed using almost seven Bridge of Weir hides. Internally the original seat frames were rebuilt and fitted with new foams. The hood frame was refurbished and repainted and then fitted with a new mohair hood, custom made to the original pattern.
This wonderful Moretti may be the only fully restored Moretti 2300 S convertible in the world. Designed by Michelotti and restored to this level provides for a car of great investment quality. Tool kit and jack are included with the car as is an original brochure. Having now been run in, it will be supplied fully serviced and prepared for its new owner. Please note number plate '10 TSY' is not included, if remaining in the UK the car will receive an appropriate age-related registration number.
