Touring unveil the Disco Volante Spyder at Geneva 2016
Thursday 3rd March 2016
Italian design masters Touring Superleggera set enthusiasts’ pulses racing at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show by revealing the beautiful Disco Volante. At this years Geneva Motor show those same enthusiasts might just need oxygen as touring unveiled their Disco Volante Spyder to mark the legendary company’s 90th anniversary.
Sharing similar lines to the 2012 Disco Volante, Touring have created an open top car with the removal of two carbon fiber roof panels which stow in the boot whilst the occupants enjoy open-air motoring.
The original “Disco Volante†which is Italian for “flying saucer†originally debuted in 1953 with highly advanced aerodynamics, which produced an impressive drag coefficient of 0.25. Two examples were built along with two topless Spyders.
Until late, true coach built or low volume re-styling of high end production cars had been virtually non existent, but 2012 was heralded as a great return to form for Touring Superleggera with their stunning modern interpretation of the Disco Volante.
Touring were coy with the technical details when they released the Disco Volante in 2012, but their masterpiece was based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competitizione with a Maserati-sourced 4.7-liter V8 under the hood producing 444 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, enough for 0 to 60 mph in the 4.0-second range, and a top speed of circa 180 mph.
With only 500 8C coupes and 500 Spiders produced by Alfa Romeo, Touring had to sacrifice a very rare car to make this beauty. But the Disco Volante Spyder will be even rarer. Only seven will be made, and each will be painted in a unique color. The show car’s fetching shade is called Blue Ceruleo.
