007's Lotus falls short of estimate at RM Auctions

Despite being sold for over half-million pounds, 007's non road-worthy Lotus Esprit failed to reach the guide price expected by RM Auctions of between £650,000 and £950,000 yesterday.

Lotus subsequently bought the car and displayed it at car shows throughout the US. Eventually it was taken to Long Island and placed into a storage unit, with the lease paid in advance for ten years. Upon expiry in 1989 the unit was auctioned blind. A $100 bid from a local couple ended up winning it. When they opened the container they found the iconic 007 car inside covered in blankets.
The couple owned the Lotus until yesterday, when RM Auctions in London sold the restored car, complete with apparently fully operational original equipment
