A return to F1 for Alfa Romeo?
Saturday 2nd January 2016
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Alfa Romeo’s parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), has stated that the historic Alfa Romeo marque is planning a return to Formula one.
Over the next few years FCA will be investing heavily in Alfa Romeo to enable it to compete head to head with other luxury manufacturers, specifically BMW and Mercedes. Marchionne sees the Alfa Romeo’s return to F1, competing alongside their other premium Italian manufacturer Ferrari, as a critical move for the Alfa brand. Furthermore he is quoted in Italian press as stating
"It's incredible how the Alfa Romeo brand remains in people's hearts and for that reason we are thinking of it returning to Formula One racing as our competitor.
"It's important for Alfa Romeo to return. It will be another competitor"
It was 1985 when Alfa Romeo last entered a
works F1 team. Up until this time they had been a racing heavyweight with a great pedigree going back before F1 championship instigated in 1950. In the first two years of F1 Alfa Romeo achieved ten F1 victories and two drivers' titles before the works team withdrew from the series. Following this Alfa Romeo existed as an engine supplier during the 1960s and 1970s before Alfa Romeo's returning with a fully-fledged team between 1979 and 1985. Prior to this their race history and many successes can be traced back to as early as 1911.
More recently the Alfa Romeo logo has been seen on the rear of Ferrari’s engines during the last F1 season, showing the close ties between the two-legendry marques.
These are exciting times for Alfa Romeo and followers of the marque and will surely lead to the rightful reinstatement of legendary brand in racing and the revival of it’s racing DNA.
