Elon Musk revealed as 007's Lotus Sub's new owner
Thursday 17th October 2013
Technology Billionaire Elon Musk is the new owner of the famous 007 James Bond Lotus Esprit submarine car. Having purchased it as a telephone bidder from RM Actions in London last month, he tried to keep identity secret but it has now been revealed by car blog Jalopnik and confirmed by a Tesler Cars spokesperson.
The man behind the evolution of PayPal and now CEO Tesla Cars paid £616,000 for the 'car' and was said to be disappointed that it was not truly transformable from car to submarine. It was built as just a wet submarine requiring the driver to wear a wet suit and breathing apparatus to submerge. But fear not, Elon has confirmed that he intends to rectify this by converting it with Tesler electronic running gear, so it drives and transforms into a submarine as it did with James Bond at the wheel in 1977 film The Spy who loved me.
Now this might seem a bit of a challenge to us mere mortals but earlier this year, Elon Musk revealed plans for a public transport system to shuttle passengers between Los Angeles and San Francisco at 800 miles per hour. If he can work out how to do that getting 007's submarine car to really transform doesn't seem that difficult a task.
The car had been lost since its appearance in the 1977 Bond movie, however in 1989 someone in Long Island paid $100 for a storage container and found the dented vehicle inside covered up by blankets! It is believed it remained in their ownership until RM in London sold it on Monday September 9th 2013.
