Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 wins Best of Show at Villa D'Este 2015
Tuesday 26th May 2015
The Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa D'Este on the beautiful shores of Lake Como, was where legendary Italian coachbuilder revealed the stunning Mostro powered by Maserati sports car concept and announced a limited production run of five cars. This was not the only time at this event their designs were admired, as one from decades before won the events Best of Show award.
The car was this 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato, owned by David Sydorick. David, an American, has one of the most significant collections of Zagatos in the world including a 1956 Ferrari 250 GTZ, a 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GTZ and a 1963 Alfa Romeo TZ.
The award winning 8C is one of the oldest Zagatos known which debuted in 1931 powered by a 2.3 litre straight-eight engine, replacing The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750. Originally a race car to be used exclusively by Alfa Romeo it was eventually sold as a rolling chassis to private owners. several design houses proposed bodies for the chassis, including Zagato.
Enzo Ferrari favoured some of the Zagato-bodied cars and used them in the days of Scuderia Ferrari, selecting Zagato as a technical partner with it's ability to produce light, aerodynamic, aeronatically influenced racing bodies.
Enzo's appreciation of the abilities of the coachbuilder was reinforced with when the 8C 2300 Zagato, in different versions dominated the most important races of the period - The Mille Miglia, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Spa.
Villa D'Este 22nd - 24th May 2015.
