No more Tax Discs
Wednesday 1st October 2014
From today drivers can tear up their tax discs ending 93 years of their presence on our windscreens.
From Wednesday the traditional tax disc will vanish, after 93 years on our windscreens. Car owners still need to have paid vehicle tax to drive or keep a vehicle on the road. Police cameras with number plate recognition will automatically check that road tax has been paid.
The new system will enable drivers to spread the cost of their tax by monthly direct debit. Until now drivers paying by direct debit have had to pay every six or 12 months – and those making a payment twice a year have had to pay a ten per cent surcharge. From now on the surcharge will be halved to five per cent.
The tax disc changes have proved controversial, after a survey just one month ago revealed that half of UK drivers were still oblivious to the changes.
Almost a third of those polled by money.co.uk said they would await instructions from the Driving Vehicle and Licensing Agency, although it claimed at the time that the DVLA had yet to start adding warnings to tax renewal reminders.
