With the values of blue-chip ultra rare and desirable classic cars heading skyward setting new records it is fair to say the 2013 auction market has been manic.
However, the world record sale price achieved this year was actually a private sale - a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for $52m.
The highest price achieved at auction came from Bonham's Goodwood Festival of Speed auction where a hot but excited crowd got the opportunity to see a hard fought battle resulting in an overseas telephone bidder paying £19.6m for ex Fangio's 1954 Mercedes W196 racing car.
Following are the top five auction sales values of 2013 ~
5th place: 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France for $9.46m
Sold by Gooding & Company, Pebble Beach in August, a Ferrari 250 GT TdF at Pebble Beach for $9.46m USD. The bid was however in range of their original estimate of $9 to $11m USD.
4th place: 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM for just under €10m euros
Sold by RM Autions, Villa D'Este sale, Lake Como in May. RM Auctions took €9.856m for a Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta.
3rd place: 1964 Ferrari 250 LM for $14.3m
Sold by RM and Sotheby's auction in New York in November, a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM sold for $14.3m USD.
2nd place: 1967 Ferrari N.A.R.T. Spider for $27.5m
Sold by RM Auctions in Monterey, the highest price ever paid at auction for a Ferrari: the Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider of $27.5m USD.
1st place: Fangio's 1954 Mercedes W196 racing car for £19.6m
Sold by Bonham's at their Goodwood Festival of Speed auction ​​in July. The former Silver Arrow of Juan Manuel Fangio, a factory Mercedes W196, achieved £19.6m.
