Government vehicle licensing changes
Monday 16th December 2013
December 16th marked two changes the government has made to our vehicle licensing regulations - You do not need to provide proof of insurance when licensing your car and you will not need to continually reconfirm a vehicles off road status once you have made a SORN declaration for it. Once a SORN declaration has been made it will remain in place until it is re-licensed or sold. A SORN declaration will not carry over change of ownership of a vehilcle, it is the new owners responsibility to license it or declare it SORN.
This will make things far simpler for owners of classic cars who are keeping the cars off road. It will also remove the previous headache of notifying and proofing to the DVLA that you have scrapped a car and it no longer exists, which was previously arduous and normally was got round by annually declaring the already scrapped car SORN.
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs' (FBHVC) Chairman, Geoff Lancaster commented “DVLA are to be congratulated for making sensible use of their technology to maintain their high standards of service while at the same time simplifying life for road users."
We think that the reduction in pointless administration and the savings in the tax system are great with less bits of paper to deal with for motorists by getting rid of unnecessary red tape.â€
The removal of the annual SORN renewal applies throughout the United Kingdom, removal of the insurance check applies to Great Britain only and not to Northern Ireland.
We will still miss paper tax discs though!
