Sir Jackie and brother Jimmy's cars go under the hammer
Thursday 28th November 2013
Jimmy and Jackie Stewart are Scotland's most famous racing drivers and two cars previously raced by them are to be auctioned next month and the rumor is they could well achieve £2m on the day
The cars are part of the Ecurie Ecosse motor car collection of Dick Skipworth, one is a C-Type sports racing roadster and 1960 Cooper Monaco sports racing prototype and they will be auctioned by Bonhams in London.
The Jaguar was Newley purchased by motor trader Bob Sanderson and was raced by his son Ninian with Scottish team mates, it was one of three they competed in. But in 1953 Jimmy Stewart took the wheel of the car which, after it's chassis number, was know as '042', he came third at Charterhall and sixth at the Nurburgring in Germany
The 1960 Cooper Monaco sports racing prototype was first raced by Tommy Dickson in 1960 at Charterhall Aerodrome and the opinion is that it will reach between £200,000 and £300,000 under Bonhams hammer.
In 1963 David Murray took he car back to Scotland, where it won six races in a row under the control of Sir Jackie Stewart. This straight success in the Cooper Monaco was what led to Sir Jackie Stewart signing for the 1964 1-litre Formula 3 racing team owned by Ken Tyrrell and John Cooper called Formula Junior.
His success in the Cooper Monaco, launched his career as a full-time professional racer and led him to be one of Britain's most respected drivers. He went on to become triple Formula 1 World Champion driver and was knighted for his services to motor racing and charitable causes.
After Jimmy's death in 2008, Sir Jackie also drove 042 in homage to his late brother. He always credited his brothers motivation and nurturing of his interest in the sport during his "dark" days at school.
The C-Type and Cooper Monaco will be offered to auction on December 1 at Bonhams in London.
