Alfa Romeo to return to F1 in 2018
Wednesday 29th November 2017
Alfa Romeo, steeped in motorsport history, is retuning to Formula 1 in 2018.
Alfa Romeo of Milano today announced it will be partnering with Sauber, in what is being referred to as a “multi-year technical and commercial partnership, which will be called the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.” They will begin competing next year, and the cars will be in full Alfa regalia livery.
CEO of FCA, Sergio Marchionne, commented: “This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years. A storied marque that has helped make the history of this sport, Alfa Romeo will join other major automakers that participate in Formula 1. The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 Team's undisputed experience.”
There is no team nor manufacturer that has roots in this sport that run as deep as Alfa Romeo's. People started racing cars less than a year after the company was founded. The marque rose quickly in motorsport establishing the likes of Enzo Ferrari's career. Alfa Romeo were the champions of the series' very first World Championship in 1925 with their P2 Car. In another first a few decades later, the team would earn the first drivers' World Championship for Nino Farina in 1950.
Missing from the top flight of motorsport since 1985 we look forward to seeing Alfa Romeo on the track once more and will cheer them on with pride and passion.
