Monday 29th May 2017
Best of Show at the 2017 Villa d'Este Elegance Competition has been awarded to a 1957 prototype Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale. Italian design triumphed on the shores of Lake Como and was presented with the Gold Cup. Designed by Franco Scaglione, the concept car was chosen for the award during the closing gala of the evening. The Giulietta was penned by Scaglione during his time with Bertone Carrozzeria and he is appreciated as one of the most important automotive designers ever in Italy. In the year of the 60th anniversary of its construction, the Giulietta SS Prototipo shares its inspiration with the three famous Alfa Romeo B.A.T. ("Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica"prototypes) built between 1953 and 1955.
Presented at the Villa d'Este Elegance Competition by Giovanna Scaglione, daughter of the unforgettable designer, it is owned by collector Corrado Lopresto. This prototype lead to the production of 1350 examples between 1959 and 1962.
Milan based Sig. Lopresto's chassis number 000001 is used to being shown, it took the award for Most Elegant Closed Car at last years Pebble Beech Concours too.
A beautiful car, best of show, in Italy, on the shores of Lake Como, out-classing the likes of Ferrari, in their 70th Anniversary year - who would of thought of such a thing, Go Alfa!
